Pippalada was born during a time of great hardship. Legend says he was abandoned as a child under a tree, surviving only on the fallen fruits (pippala) of the tree, which earned him his name. Growing up in isolation, he sought to understand the cause of human suffering and death, particularly why he was orphaned. His quest led him to deep meditation and eventually to the deity Shani (Saturn) , whom he challenged regarding the miseries of life.
