: Move all furniture, toys, and clutter from the carpet. For immovable furniture, place plastic film or foil under the legs to prevent moisture damage.
: Start in the corner farthest from the door and work backward so you never walk on wet carpet.
: Fill the tank with hot (but not boiling) water and the manufacturer-recommended amount of detergent. Over-soaping can leave a sticky residue that attracts more dirt.
: Vacuum the entire area twice in opposite directions. This prevents surface dirt from turning into muddy patches when wet.
: Once fully dry, vacuum one last time to lift the carpet pile and remove any final loose particles.
